A beach photograph cannot show how you will reach the accommodation with your luggage. On a short Baltic break, a straightforward journey can matter more than a particularly attractive balcony view. Two properties on the same stretch of coast may involve very different amounts of daily effort.

Start with your actual departure address, travel date and a realistic arrival window. A convenient weekday service says little about a Sunday return. In Schleswig-Holstein, the NAH.SH planner can include addresses, walking sections and connections. Elsewhere, use the relevant transport operator or regional journey planner.

Check four journeys, rather than one

Look at arrival, departure, an ordinary beach day and a bad-weather day. This reveals whether a property is convenient only when you first arrive or throughout the stay. A nearby station is less useful if the bus needed for your outings runs infrequently at weekends. Conversely, a more distant railway station may work well when the connecting journey to your accommodation is straightforward.

Give the final stretch its own assessment. Check the route from the stop to the front door with a suitcase, pushchair or wheelchair in mind. Straight-line distances do not explain major roads, cobbles or underpasses. Ask the host which arrival route guests normally use, without assuming that a collection service is available.

Make a small shortlist comparable

For three possible bases, record the total journey time, number of changes, final connecting departure and access to groceries. Add beach proximity and room facilities afterwards. This keeps a low room price from distracting you from repeated taxi fares or a difficult shopping trip. For a group, use the pace of the person who needs the most time or assistance.

A longer rail journey with one manageable change may feel easier than a slightly faster option with several tight connections. Allow time for delays, toilets and finding your way around an unfamiliar station. The first evening should not depend on arriving at a key collection office at the last possible minute.

Before booking inflexible accommodation, check the chosen transport arrangement again. Engineering works and replacement buses can change a previously suitable journey. The beach may remain the same while the timetable does not. When two places appeal equally, choosing the one with the more workable travel chain is a sound decision. You gain time at the destination without needing to add more nights to the booking.
