For a March break, a useful question is not how much coastline you can cover. It is how easily you can move between a short outdoor visit and somewhere warm. An empty stretch of sand may look inviting yet feel cold after twenty minutes. Plan the transitions between your accommodation, the shore and a break before deciding on a walking distance.
Choose short connections
Accommodation within walking distance of a town centre can be more useful in March than an isolated sea view. Look at the actual route to the promenade. A straight-line distance does not reveal a missing crossing, an unpaved section or a detour around a harbour. Without a car, also check whether the connection you need runs on your particular day of travel.
Find two possible places for a warm break and check their opening information shortly before leaving. One can be part of your intended route; the other should be closer to your accommodation. This stops the outing depending on a single café being open. A flask is welcome, but it is not a substitute for an indoor place when someone is thoroughly cold.
Two short outings can work better than one long walk
After arrival, start with an easy route on which you can turn back. Use it to find out how the wind feels beside the water. If conditions suit everyone, a longer outing can follow the next day. In colder weather, two separate walks with a substantial break between them may be a better use of the day.
One possible framework is a morning stroll around town, lunch near your accommodation and a short afternoon visit to the coast. This is a planning example, not a timed itinerary. Each part should be removable without breaking the others. A sunny afternoon does not mean you have to make up every kilometre missed in the morning.
Pack for standing still as well as walking. Taking photographs, waiting for transport or sitting on a bench can feel colder than moving. Carry an extra layer even when it seems unnecessary on the first part of the route. Think about what happens afterwards, too: damp gloves and socks need somewhere suitable to dry. Ask about drying arrangements if you are staying in a small room with limited space.
March does not guarantee a particular temperature or a deserted resort. Read weather warnings and local notices for the dates of your visit. If access is closed or warnings make a coastal outing unsuitable, spend the day in town. A short spring break works better when cancelling one walk does not make the whole trip feel unsuccessful.
