The first night in a holiday apartment does not require a major grocery shop. A simple meal, something to drink and breakfast for the next morning are often enough for a relaxed arrival. The important point is that these few supplies suit your arrival time and the kitchen available.

Check the kitchen before planning the shop

Read the equipment description for a hob, kettle, refrigerator and tableware. Ask if you depend on something specific. A kitchenette does not, for example, guarantee an oven. For the first meal, a dish with few ingredients and modest equipment needs is usually easier than an elaborate recipe.

Do not assume that salt, oil, coffee or washing-up liquid will be left by earlier guests. Ask whether basic supplies are provided or bring small quantities yourself. This avoids having to go out again shortly before closing time because one essential ingredient is missing.

A small arrival reserve

Food that travels well and suits your dietary requirements makes planning easier. Bread or crispbread, a shelf-stable spread and fruit may be an uncomplicated option. For a hot meal, choose a simple combination and check the cookware it requires. Packages with clear ingredient information are more helpful for particular dietary needs than unfamiliar leftovers in the apartment.

Only transport chilled products with suitable cooling and follow the instructions on their packaging. For a long travel day, it is often easier to buy perishable items at the destination. However, that requires a shopping option you can actually reach.

Opening hours for the right day

Check the specific shop and travel date, especially for a late arrival, Sunday or public holiday. General information about a resort is not a reliable substitute for the chosen store's opening hours. If your journey is delayed, the first meal should still work without that shopping stop.

For the next morning, note only what you really need: perhaps bread, a drink and your usual breakfast accompaniment. You can adapt the rest of your shopping to the kitchen and upcoming outings after unpacking. This reduces luggage and helps avoid leaving too many open packages at the end of the week.
