A rental bicycle should not remain unfamiliar until several kilometres into the ride. Collection is the right moment to clarify fit, controls and visible defects. This prevents a small doubt about braking or riding position from following you throughout the outing.

Adjust the bicycle together

Have the saddle and, where appropriate, handlebar adjusted. Check that you can mount, dismount and reach the controls confidently. A bicycle that looks similar to your own may behave differently. Explain the intended route and whether luggage, a child seat or a trailer will be used. Accessories must suit the bicycle and be correctly fitted.

Look at tyres, wheels and frame. Mention obvious damage, loose components or unusually soft tyres before leaving. ADFC bicycle-check guidance includes brakes, tyres, drivetrain and lighting. As the customer, you do not need to diagnose a repair: ask the rental staff to inspect concerns or provide another bicycle.

Include a short trial ride

On a suitable area away from traffic, try starting, changing gear and braking. Both brakes should be understandable to operate and work reliably. Do not dismiss unfamiliar scraping, unusual noises or instability as normal. Return to the collection point immediately rather than hoping the issue will resolve during the trip.

For an e-bike, ask for an explanation of assistance, display and any walk-assist function. Check the starting charge and the correct charger if longer use is planned. A displayed range is an estimate, not a promise for your route in every wind condition. Establish how the bicycle works without assistance and which battery instructions apply.

Clarify return and breakdown arrangements

Record the return location and deadline. Ask whom to contact after a fault and what support the business actually provides. Test the supplied lock and key. Agree on documenting existing damage so that returning the bicycle does not create uncertainty.

Only then attach bags. They must not obstruct steering or braking or reach moving parts. Begin with a short manageable section. If the position or handling still feels wrong, returning early is easier than correcting matters far from the rental shop. A careful handover takes a little time but improves the rest of the day, particularly when several family members are collecting different bicycles at once.
