A coastal walk with a dog needs more planning than finding a long line beside the sea. Paths may cross protected areas, narrow at entrances or finish on a beach with separate dog rules. The whole connection needs to be permitted and suitable for both animal and person.
Check the route and its boundaries
Use current local information and, where relevant, the protected-area authority’s guidance. Establish dog access and lead requirements separately. In the Western Pomeranian Lagoon Area National Park, dogs remain on leads. A designated dog beach outside the park does not change the rules for the approach. A quiet season does not automatically remove protection requirements either.
Look especially at transitions between promenade, woodland and beach. Steps may be difficult for a particular dog, while a narrow walkway can complicate encounters. Prefer a manageable route with room over one requiring constant evasive movements. Give space to bicycles, children and people who do not want the dog to approach.
Arrange water and pauses yourself
Carry drinking water and a suitable way to offer it. Do not rely on an open café supplying a bowl. Seawater is no substitute. A longer walk may be demanding even on a cool day. Stop at permitted locations without entering dunes or sensitive shoreline areas.
Check the fit of the lead and any harness before leaving. Keep the dog close in restricted or poorly visible sections so others can pass safely. An animal noticing birds or wildlife should not be allowed to reach their resting place before action is taken. Increase the distance early rather than waiting for wildlife to flee.
A towel and cover help on returning to the car or accommodation. Check for visible foreign objects or injury after the walk and obtain professional advice if something seems wrong. The fact that a dog appears willing to continue is not the only measure of a suitable distance; fatigue, surface and the remaining return all matter. Turn back at a closure or unsuitable passage. Having a dog with you is not a reason to use a prohibited connection.
